In vitro release study of electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone)/gelatin nanofiber mats loaded with 5-fluorouracil

Abstract The electrospinning process was used to successfully encapsulate an anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), into poly(ε-caprolactone)/gelatin (Gel) nanofiber mats (5-FU-PCL/Gel NFs). Nanofibers are recognized be potential carriers for the delivery of drugs. One safest solvent systems making PCL/Gel NF is formic acid/acetic acid (FA/AA) system. A compound solution jet drawn from a customized coaxial spinneret using high electric field 20 kV. loading 5-FU with three different concentrations (5, 10, and 15 wt.%) improved PCL stabilization in FA/AA miscibility blended polymers electrospun nanofibers being well distributed matrix investigated X-ray diffraction (XRD). In vitro release revealed sustained mats, whereas slower found when higher were used. produced studied by SEM, FTIR, TGA, DSC. According study on drug kinetics, released PCl/Gel NFs diffusion-controlled pattern.
